The New Book Market

To say that there are dynamic changes taking place in the rare and collectible book market is an understatement.

Once the ‘market’ for rare and collectible books comprised of a couple of hundred well recognised and highly reputable rare book sellers and collectors who slowly and laboriously accumulated books in their specialty. It was not very long ago that collectors desired ‘depth’- accumulating every book and piece of ephemera by a special author or within a peculiar genre. A collector looking for for a specific book amassed dealers catalogs, visited stores in distant recesses of the world hoping to chance upon the books they desired.

Collecting was a “gentleman’s” game. Traders cautiously educated their buyers over years, assisting them in selectin books that brought depth to their collections. Dealers swore on word-of-mouth and reputation to launch their business. Dealers were mostly, ’specialized’. Book collecting made up more than a hobby, it was an compulsion to some.

They never projected that with a sole click of a button they would br able to access the catalogues of 1000s of rare and collectable book sellers and select among 100s of thousands of books in every version.

Where onetime it could have required years to encounter a book desired by a collector, now involves minutes. Yes, the market has changed since the World Wide Web arrived.

The World Wide Web has imparted fluidness to the scarce and collectible book market. And fluidness is actually crucial for any market. All it entails is that, when you’re prepared to distribute there’s a customer, ready willing and able to purchase your offering.

The cyberspace has also bestowed the ingredient of transactional speed. Individuals are purchasing and selling books at a rate of speed that looks astounding by standards just a couple of years ago. 1000s of books are being distributed day-after-day.

On merely one web site there are above 2,500 dealings happening day-after-day. And there are tons of internet sites that purchase and distribute rare and collectible books.
